Exclusive Interview with music artist “Matt Westin”
Q: Hi Matt! How have things been going since the release of your single, “Thin Blue Line?”
A lot has been happening since the release. This song means so much to me, so I was hoping that it would make some waves and make a difference. I’m proud to say that it hasn’t disappointed. I’ve been nominated for multiple awards and made it to the final rounds in some contests, including the Josie Music Awards and the International Singer Songwriter Association awards. I was honored to say a few words and featured my lyric video at the annual Law Enforcement Gun Bash here in the Pittsburgh area for hundreds of people, and the heartfelt and tearful thank you’s from many who attended was honestly one of the proudest moments of my life. So, I keep seeing things moving in a very positive direction. Onward and upward.
Q: You’ve had quite a ride with your current single doing very well on the charts. What has been the most thrilling thing that’s happened to you in the past year?
My experience at the gun bash was probably number one, but I’ve also been blessed to begin working with a band in Tennessee called Tennessee Outlaw Country, and I’m very excited about that as well.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not making music?
I enjoy working out, watching shows and learning about Biblical prophecy and my faith, hanging with my friends and family around good food, drink, and music, and I have some hobbies. I really enjoy golf and bowling and just being outside in general. I try to travel as much as I can. I think I have become a bit more of a homebody since the pandemic, though. I used to go to bars and to karaoke multiple times a week, but now I prefer to stay in and relax in my recliner like an old man!
Q: You live in Pittsburgh, PA. What is your favorite thing about the city?
There’s a lot to love about Pittsburgh. It’s hard to choose. There is so much good food, entertainment, sports, and outdoor activities and sights. It’s really a beautiful city with lots of culture. But since it’s football season, I’ll say that right now my favorite thing is being a part of Steeler Nation and getting to watch the games with my favorite people. It really makes me happy spending time enjoying the games with great company and people I love. Pittsburgh fans will understand what I mean.
Q: If you could perform with anyone in the world, who would that be and why?
Willie Nelson. He’s one of my idols and a living legend. A national treasure. Of course, he was one of the Highwaymen, and Johnny Cash is one of my all time favorites. Since I’m portraying Johnny in the film 116 MacDougal, to get to perform with Willie would be indescribable. I know Willie isn’t exactly my style of music, but that’s my honest answer.
Q: Are you political at all? Do you get involved in social media debates?
I try to keep my personal and political views to myself. I don’t engage in debates online. It’s not healthy, and God knows I have enough going on already to stress me out. I don’t need the added stress.
Q: What is one thing about yourself that you would change?
I would pray more. Sounds like a simple fix, but for some reason it’s something that I think a lot of people can relate to. That, and I would be better at keeping in touch with people. I upset myself when I think about it. Also, a simple fix. It’s strange.
Q: If you had any advice for an up and coming artist, what would that be?
I could go on and on, but I’ll boil it down and keep it short. Believe in yourself and your vision, surround yourself with good trustworthy people, and take some risks. If you believe in yourself and work hard, with support and encouragement from those people, you’ll have the courage to take some risks, and that’s how opportunities are made.
Q: Any plans for a new single?
Absolutely. I have a few new singles I’m working on right now. As well as one with the band in Tennessee. Lots of exciting things coming soon!
Q: Will you be releasing a follow up album?
That’s been up for debate. I think right now I’m going to stick to releasing some singles. I have one that’s already finished, that I’ve actually been sitting on for a couple years, and a few others that are in the process of writing/recording as we speak.
Q: Any last shout outs or words for your fans?
Thank you for your support and thank you for listening. From my heart, it means the world to me. Take care of yourselves and keep on listening!
