Interview with Music Artist Known as “New Rules Duo”

Q: Please introduce yourself to the readers and what made you want to become a musician?

New Rules Duo is a multi-award-winning international duo based in Cyprus. We travel around the world performing and doing what we absolutely love. Dom is on guitar and vocals and Celia is the lead vocalist. Since a young age, we have both dreamed of touring, performing and doing what we love. We are extremely fortunate to be following our dreams.

Q: Who has been your most influential teacher or mentor?

Celia: For me it was my brother, who has sadly passed. He always had the most positive attitude to life and chasing your dreams. He always said that as long as you work hard and stick at it only good things could come from it. So I try to live each day to the fullest and make him proud.

Dom: Probably my first guitar teacher who was the reason I started playing guitar. The beauty of music is that you can have many mentors or idols. And I would go even further the more the better. That’s why it would be hard to choose just one.

Q: What are your favourite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?

Celia: I love most genres to be honest and I'm happy that in the duo we try to be as versatile as possible and perform songs from as many as possible! At the moment I am really loving Blues and Funk. I feel connected to that style.

Dom: When I was on Camp Rock USA in Elmhurst USA our couch said that in every music genre, you can find 10 % of the genius and 90 % of shit. And I believe that. That's why I find this 10% in every music genre!

Q: What would you say is your greatest weakness as an artist?

Celia: It's sometimes very hard to keep learning new songs. When I finally learn a few I have to learn more as there are so many songs released and we like to be current.

Dom: Being so judgmental over your own music. Nothing is ever good enough to post or share. But I try to fight with it every step of the way.

Q: In terms of the overall composition, what is your favorite song and why?

Celia: This is hard! It's like choosing my favourite child!! Im really proud of our ‘Rendition’ of Wicked Games as it showcases both myself and Dom and also Doms crazy guitar skills! Im also very happy with how different it is from the original. It is very catchy and upbeat.

Dom: Same here!

Q: What kind of music artist would you classify yourself as?

As we are so versatile and like to cover many genres it's had to box us into one style or similar to a music artist.

Q: Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

Celia: I absolutely love strong female artists and one of my favourites is Lady Gaga. She is not only hugely talented she is also an amazing role model to so many. She does so much to ‘give back’ and stands for ‘helping others’. This is very inspiring for me. It's certainly what I aim to do if I ever made it big!

Dom: No one really just loves being on stage and feeling emotions flow everywhere!

Q: Would you agree that it is very important to learn, study and understand old music and music history?

It's certainly helpful to have some knowledge about music, reading music and its history but it is also very true that people are born with talent. If you are passionate about singing or playing an instrument that is what is most important. The passion for it.

Q: Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

We have been so lucky to perform at some amazing places and venues. Each one is great for its own reason. Some of the smaller venues are as equal to the larger ones. It all depends on the audience and the vibe. In November 2022 we had our first tour to the USA and we performed in many venues in and around Illinois. It was an experience to never forget. We are happy to say that we were immediately booked for a return tour this November (2023). We have also been booked for our very first ticketed event in Chicago at a theatre with a thousand capacity. We are extremely excited as this has always been a dream for us.

Q: What’s next for you?

Next is our return tour to the USA in November. This time it will be an extended time, November and December 2023. We will not only perform in and around Illinois but we plan to travel more into other states. We are in discussions to travel to Nashville and Tennessee. We will be announcing full details closer to the time.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for your Music video?

When we were booked for our tour last year we knew we had to film whilst in the USA! We wanted to show our tour and the places we had travelled to with our followers and so linked the videos with our songs.

Q: Do you have any advice for young music makers like yourself?

The biggest advice would be….. never to give up! If you love what you are doing then keep working hard. Keep pushing and follow your dreams. It's very hard to give up when things get hard and test us. But anything worth having is never easy to obtain!
