Interview with Goddess Dorthea, Spiritual Counselor and Certified Holistic Music Therapist Using Music & Affirmations To Heal
Q: Please introduce yourself to the readers and how you first got into this field of work –and who were some of your influences growing up?
Peace soul family, I am Goddess Dorthea — a spiritual counselor and soul musician certified in holistic music therapy. I got into the music business because I wanted to create affirmation music to uplift and inspire my soul mate clients and mentees. I love making music because I love the way it makes me feel. It’s healing to the soul and I get to share this feeling with the world.
Some of my influences growing up were Aaliyah. Erykah Badu, Beyonce, Ashanti, Missy Elliot and Lauryn Hill. I always loved emotional songs or ones with lyrics that really touched the heart. R&B inspired me to want to create music. But I love all genres of music. I create r&b, hip hop, afrobeats, reggaeton, soft rock and more. I look forward to expanding my musical palette and creating more diverse sounds with my affirmation music. I would say that I have a melodic R&B island vibe now.
Q: What kind of training have you had, if any?
I am a certified holistic therapist with a certification in music therapeutic counseling. I am also an ordained Interfaith Minister and Spiritual Counselor. I focus more on my music therapy training — understanding how my lyrics, sounds and the vibrations of my art affects the human psyche to inspire health, healing and wholeness.
Q: What has been your favourite project to work on so far?
My most favorite project is the current one “The Soul HealHer: Rebirth” because it was a very personal record for me. It tells a story of my healing journey and the people/ soul mentors who’ve guided me along the way. I looked in the mirror, saw my own reflection and decided to share that vision with the world. This also ties with my first album, Modern Soul Sister — because it was a classic and my first production. My soul mate clients inspired me to write healing music because I knew that my programs weren’t going to last forever with them; so I wanted to create something that would always be with them. The music was my way of sharing my healing energy and soul with the world. I’m grateful to walk this path now.
Q: What has been one of the biggest highlights/achievements of your career?
I believe the biggest highlight of my career so far was becoming the R&B Songwriter of the Year Finalist for my song “Rock & Foundation” with the World Songwriting Awards. I feel like this was a huge turning point for me because it was my first major accolade. I’ve only been a soul musician for 1 year, since the release of The “Modern Soul Sister” on 11/11/2020. So, this feels like doors are opening for me in ways that I didn’t even imagine.
Q: If you had a chance to work alongside anybody who would that be?
If I had a chance to work alongside anyone — it would probably be Erykah Badu. I’ve had dreams of this and one day I pray that I can make it my reality. She is one of my core inspirations for being my most authentic version of self as an Artist; which is why I made a skit in dedication to her that sampled a podcast.
Q: What projects do you have coming up?
I have 2 more albums in the works. Because I am an Interfaith and Spiritual Counselor above all, I also finished building up 3 different coaching programs that will assist in healing my soul mate clients and I am working on a few digital, print and hardcover books as well to assist with these programs. After I complete these new big projects, I’ll be collaborating with my husband, Savior Monroe for our joint endeavor Divinity 2.0.
Q: Who is your inspiration?
My fans, husband and my child are my only inspirations. If it wasn’t for them, I probably wouldn’t be putting music out into the world. I would write songs, but keep them in my heart or sing them in sacred moments of meditation or prayer. It would be a language between me and the Divine. However, having loved ones and supporters who also see my work as healing motivates me to keep sharing and producing.
Q: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week?
I just finished two books, “Word Magic” by Pao Chang. This book has inspired me to become even more intentional with my lyrics. I also read a book about DBT in Music; which helped me to better incorporate my music into my therapy practices.
Q: What are your favorite venues to perform in?
I love performing outside, near water. I love to be in nature and in the Sun. I love to feel a cool breeze on my skin and the ability to feel as if I’m singing to the glories of Nature or a Divine higher power outside of me. I have stage nervousness, but everytime I’m grounded in nature… I feel comfortable and in my element.
Q: Do you have any advice for young music makers like yourself?
1. Don’t give up on your dreams. Your dreams won’t give up on you. 2. Make music that you wish to hear — don’t let anyone convince you to step outside of your most authentic version of self. 3. Focus on your goals. Understand the business. Make your hobbies lucrative — and give the world something they’ll never seen. 4. If your heart isn’t it, don’t do it. Stay true to Self. There’s no such thing as “no,” you’re just talking to the wrong person.
